Sustainable Pet Ownership: Tips for an Eco-Friendly Life

As pet owners, we love our your furry, feathery, scaly friends (and all the other kinds of pet buddies as well); for a lot of us, that love of animals is adjacent to an enjoyment of the natural world that we inhabit. Eternal Tides is rooted in sustainable aftercare, but sustainability can (and maybe should) influence more than aftercare. Here are some tips for making pet ownership more sustainable, helping to reduce your carbon footprint while providing the best care for your pet.

1. Choose Sustainable Pet Food
One of the simplest ways to reduce your pet's environmental impact is by choosing eco-friendly pet food. Look for brands that use sustainably sourced ingredients, minimal packaging, and avoid artificial additives. What goes in to a pet’s food is a HOT issue that has a lot of divisive opinions… We’re not really “in” to stirring that pot, so do some homework and make choices that align with your values and ethics. Here’s a short article describing some options.

2. Use Biodegradable Waste Bags
Well… S*%@ happens while walking your dog, perhaps you could opt for biodegradable waste bags instead of plastic ones. These bags break down more quickly and reduce the amount of plastic waste in landfills. Some companies even offer compostable bags, providing an even greener alternative. There are countless options offered at a spectrum of price points. Don’t be “that” person, clean up after your pup poops, and be thoughtful about what you use to do that.

3. Buy Eco-Friendly Toys and Accessories
Pet toys, beds, and accessories are often made from non-recyclable materials and can contribute to waste. Instead, choose products made from recycled or natural materials like hemp, organic cotton, or recycled plastic. These options are not only better for the environment but can also be safer for your pet.

4. Spay and Neuter Your Pets
Bob Barker told me to do this, so it has to be true… right? Seriously, spaying and neutering help control the pet population, reducing the number of stray animals and the demand for resources. Overpopulation contributes to higher environmental strain, and taking this step can help lessen the impact (ASPCA).

5. Adopt, Don’t Shop
Adopting pets from shelters rather than purchasing from breeders reduces the demand for breeding facilities, which can be resource-intensive and contribute to overpopulation. Adopting a shelter pet gives an animal in need a second chance and supports more sustainable pet ownership practices (Humane Society).

By making small, conscious choices, you can contribute to a healthier planet while ensuring your pet leads a happy, fulfilling life. Sustainable pet ownership not only benefits the environment but also enhances the quality of life for your beloved companion.
